GTA advert ban
Television adverts for violent games are to be banned from being shown before the nine pm watershed following complaints from viewers.
The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) received eight complaints about adverts for Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas containing violence and appearing at an early time. The adverts were shown before nine pm during breaks in Channel 4's Scrapheap Challenge.
"We could understand the parents' concerns that it was inappropriate for young children to see this level of violence in advertising for a product which was only available to adults," said the ASA. "The advertising was shown in breaks around programmes which, although not designed specifically for children, were considered to be acceptable family viewing."
The ASA described on advert as showing "general scenes of violence and the use of guns" while the other the "use of guns in drive-by shootings".
Rockstar Games has said its policy was to only advertise during programmes where half the audience were under 18.
The adverts will now no longer be shown before nine pm.
