60GB PS3 is being phased out in US
Yes, no, maybe, what the heck are we doing?
After an entertaining weekend of SCEA and SCEE being confused at what each other is up to it seems there has finally some clarification on the issue of the US PlayStation 3 price cut.
Sony Europe's David Reeves stated last week that the US price cut was only taking place to clear out the current inventory of 60GB models which would then be replaced by the 80GB console.
Sony America said this wasn't true at all, entertaining us all with the sight of a company with two divisions at odds with each other.
Now the truth has become clearer and it seems David Reeves was right after all. SCEA has confirmed that the 60GB model is being phased out in the USA.
"The 60GB PS3 will be available in North America for USD 499 until supplies of that unit are depleted," said Sony spokesman Dave Karraker. "We have ample inventory to meet the immediate needs of consumers in this territory for several months to come. We won't be making any further announcements regarding our PS3 model hardware strategy in North America until the 60GB model is exhausted and market conditions are evaluated."
The end of this particular saga? We shall see.
