Jack Thompson slams 'gay' Bully

Now that it's become clear that Bully isn't a Columbine Massacre simulator, Jack's trying a different tactic.

Jack Thompson isn't letting Canis Canem Edit (Bully) off the hook. The cartoon violence didn't really live up to the whole Columbine Simulator claims but now the anti-games campaigner has found something else that offends him about the game. Namely that in the game sometimes two boys will kiss.

Today he sent a letter to Paul Eibeler, CEO of Take-Two Interactive, and various heads of US retail store chains. This letter made allegations about the game and using terms such as "scandal". See what you make of it.

Re: Gay Sex in Bully Video Game; Retail Sale of Sexual Material Harmful to Minors

It turns out that the school violence simulation game Bully also contains homosexual activity between the game’s hero, Jimmy Hopkins, and other male students.

It is my legal opinion that the sale of this game to minors, which is presently occurring at your stores in Florida, violates Florida’s “Sexual Material Harmful to Minors Statute,” Florida Statute 847.102. Each such sale to a minor constitutes a separate felony. Such sales are occurring to children of all ages because of the game’s wholly inappropriate “Teen” rating, as opposed to the “Mature” rating it deserves. A recent Reuters story indicates that parental concern about this is growing, as reportage of this new video game industry scandal is making headlines today around the world.

I already have pending a Florida lawsuit to stop the sale of Bully to minors, and now that we know that it contains not only high levels of unpunished violence but also homosexual acts the lawsuit will be amended to proceed against it and some of you who are defendants therein on these dual grounds.

I suggest strongly that all of you cease and desist all such sales in the United States immediately. Neither the game’s maker, Take-Two, nor the Entertainment Software Rating Board, told you of this homosexual content, which constitutes a fraudulent and deceptive trade practice, in my opinion, on their parts, and I have alerted the Federal Trade Commission to this.

However, now each of you knows, and from now on, from this minute forward, you are all on the hook.

I don't think the content matters any more, Jack just wants Bully banned for any reason he can think of. Which makes him seem more than a little like a sore loser. There are plenty of other games with stronger gay elements.

Should depictions of homosexuality - even if it just amounts to two boys kissing - be deemed as harmful to children. My own viewpoint is that love is a good thing and that homophobia and bigotry are plain dumb.

But what do you think?

JT has already critcised Sims2. Though his criticism was rather bizarre and seemed to be caused by his lack of knowledge of technology and games.

"The nudity placed there by the publisher/maker, Electronic Arts, is accessed by the use of a simple code that removes what is called 'the blur' which obscures the genital areas. In other words, the game was released to the public by the manufacturer knowing that the full frontal nudity was resident on the game and would be accessed by use of a simple code widely provided on the Internet. Much to the delight, one can be sure, of pedophiles around the globe who can rehearse, in virtual reality, for their abuse."

The thing was that he didn't understand was that the blur was a stylistic artistic choice, akin to what you'd see on TV. It didn't cover anything up. If you removed it what you got was no nude detail at all - naked the Sims look like store dummies - EA never put physical details in there. Sure some third-party modders made nude textures, but then you can take any game and alter the textures. Just like you can take any photo from the internet and add a moustache. JT doesn't understand the technology though.
